Dental Implants

Unlike many general dentists, Ellis Family Dentistry is able to perform the entire implant procedure, including the implant surgery (placement) and the implant crown restoration. We are here for you from start to finish!

Implants are an increasingly popular method of tooth replacement involving a metal screw placed in the bone with a crown fabricated on top of this. In many cases, implants can being utilized instead of traditional bridges. Implants are also extremely effective at anchoring partial and full dentures, improving fit and retention.

Benefits

  • The implant will support your teeth firmly and safely.
  • Your new implants will be aesthetically pleasing.
  • The dental implant will prevent progressive bone atrophy.
  • An implant is the best alternative to your natural teeth and is a more permanent and secure way to replace missing teeth than a bridge or denture.

Procedure

The natural tooth structure has two main sections, the root and the crown. The root is the section of the tooth that is below the gumline. The first step of the procedure is surgical placement of the implant, where a metal dental implant is placed to act as the root of the missing tooth. Under regular dental anesthetic, the gum tissue is opened and the dentist places the implant into the jawbone. When this is achieved, the tissue is then sutured closed. There is generally no significant discomfort with this procedure.

This implant will be left untreated for a period of 3-6 months. During this time, the bone will grow around the implant in a process called osseointegration. A removable crown may be utilized during this time period to allow for chewing and to preserve the cosmetic appearance.

The next step in the process is to attach an abutment to the tooth, which is the part of the implant that will support the final crown. In this procedure, the dentist exposes the top of the implant and meticulously places the abutment at the exact angle needed for the crown to be lined up with rest of your teeth.

Finally, an impression is taken of the implant and a final restoration is crafted. Once the crown is prepared, the dentist will secure the crown or denture to the abutment. This restoration will be comfortable and cosmetically pleasing. Your completed implant will be fully functional, allowing you to resume normal activities.

The implant will osseointegrate (bond) with the existing bone, making it extremely secure.
