Root Canals (Endodontics)

A root canal is the process of removing the nerves from the roots of a tooth.  A root canal is often necessary to save an infected, broken, or cracked tooth.  If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, an abscess can form.   You may or may not have pain in a tooth that needs a root canal, and it is very important to fix the problem before it deteriorates too far in order to avoid bigger problems and/or tooth loss. A common misconception is that a root canal is painful. This is actually not true. A tooth that needs a root canal is what causes the pain, and having the root canal done relieves this pain.

There are a number of reasons why one of your teeth may need a root canal.  These include but are not limited to, a very deep cavity that extends into the nerve, a trauma to the tooth that exposes the nerve, or a crack in the tooth that extends into the nerve of the tooth.  Some symptoms include moderate to severe tooth pain, sensitivity, and abscess, but you may also have no symptoms and still need a root canal.
After a root canal, you will need to have some kind of final restoration to protect the tooth from breakage.  Most of the time, teeth with root canals should have a crown, but in some cases a routine filling is sufficient.
