Tooth Colored Restorations (Fillings)
We use tooth colored restorations (composite resin and/or glass ionomer) to restore decayed, cracked, and stained teeth. We feel that these fillings are superior to amalgam (mercury) fillings because they allow us to restore decay while maintaining much more of your natural tooth. Amalgam fillings typically require a much larger preparation in the tooth, taking away valuable tooth structure. Tooth colored fillings are also much more aesthetically pleasing, as they match the color of your natural teeth.
Composite can also be used in some cases as an alternative to porcelain veneers. Depending on your tooth structure, it may be possible for the dentist to build composite onto your teeth and sculpt a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Composite materials today are far superior to those used in the past. With new technologies and bonding techniques, the durability of tooth colored fillings is exceptional.
Procedure
The bonding procedure is usually completed in one visit. The first step is to remove the decayed or unsightly portion of the tooth. The tooth is then etched with a liquid or gel and a bonding agent is then applied. This will allow the composite resin to be placed in the prepared tooth. The resin is then trimmed and polished, leaving you with a beautifully sculpted, natural-looking restoration.
